Left alone, bowing tends to progress rather than stabilize on its own.

What's actually pushing on the wall

Basement walls are built to hold back a certain amount of soil weight, but they're not designed for saturated, waterlogged soil, which is significantly heavier and exerts far more lateral pressure than dry soil. When drainage around a foundation isn't working — a clogged or failed footing drain, downspouts dumping water right next to the wall, poor grading — water builds up in the soil outside the wall and stays there instead of draining away, and that's the pressure that eventually bows the wall inward.

How to tell early bowing from cosmetic cracking

A truly flat wall with a vertical crack is a different situation than a wall that's visibly curved. Hold a straightedge or level against the wall horizontally at a few different heights — if there's a consistent inward curve rather than a flat surface, that's bowing, not just cracking. Horizontal cracks, especially ones running the width of the wall at a consistent height, often accompany early-stage bowing even before the curve is easy to see by eye.

Carbon fiber vs. wall anchors

Carbon fiber reinforcement strips are epoxied to the interior wall surface and are typically the right call for walls with minor bowing — they prevent further movement but don't physically pull the wall back. Wall anchors are a more involved system: a plate on the interior wall connects through a rod to an anchor set in stable soil out in the yard, and over time the anchor can be tightened to gradually straighten the wall, not just stop it from getting worse. Which one applies depends on how far the bowing has already progressed, which is something an inspection needs to actually measure rather than estimate by eye.
