Yes. A broken, clogged, or short downspout can concentrate roof runoff beside the foundation, saturate nearby soil, increase water pressure, erode grade, and contribute to basement leaks or settlement. A downspout is not the only possible cause, so inspect the full water path.
How a downspout affects the soil beside a foundation
A roof sends concentrated flow to the gutters. The downspout’s job is to carry that flow away from the house. When the outlet dumps beside the foundation, water can pond or soak into backfill next to the wall. In clay-heavy soil, repeated wetting and drying can change soil volume and stiffness; in any soil, water can find cracks, joints, and low points.
The effect is often gradual. You may notice a damp basement corner, a musty smell, a washed-out trench, or a crack before connecting it to the gutter above. A downspout can contribute to water intrusion without being the sole cause of structural movement.
The five-minute exterior check
- Look for gutters overflowing during rain or staining on the fascia.
- Check whether the elbow, extension, or underground line is cracked, clogged, disconnected, or buried.
- Follow the discharge point and see whether water ends up beside the foundation or at a window well.
- Look for soil that slopes toward the home or a depression where water collects.
- After rain, compare the wettest outside area with the wettest inside area and photograph both.
The goal is to trace water, not to prove a diagnosis from one clue. If the wettest outside area does not match the leak location, there may be more than one contributor.
What a good correction looks like
A basic correction may be cleaning the gutter, repairing the elbow, or extending the outlet to a stable discharge area. Where surface water travels across a yard, regrading or a drainage channel may be needed. Buried downspout lines should be checked for blockages and poor outlets rather than assumed to work because they disappear underground.

When downspout work is not enough
If water still enters through the cove joint, foundation crack, window well, or floor after gutters and downspouts are corrected, the foundation drainage system may need attention. If a wall is bowing or a crack is growing, moving water away is helpful but does not replace a structural evaluation. If water rises from a floor drain or plumbing fixture, call a plumber.
