
White, chalky powder on a basement wall is often efflorescence: mineral salts left behind after moisture moves through concrete or masonry and evaporates. How efflorescence usually looks
Efflorescence tends to be dry, powdery, and white or pale gray. It may follow a crack, collect at the wall-floor joint, or appear in a broad patch after a wet season. It can return after you brush it away because the deposit is the residue, not the source.
Mold is different. It often looks spotty, fuzzy, or stained and may grow on dust, paper-faced drywall, wood, or stored belongings rather than on clean concrete alone. You cannot identify every material with a glance, so avoid treating appearance as a diagnosis. If the area is damp, smells musty, or has affected finished materials, deal with the moisture promptly.
What the deposit can tell you about the water path
Start with timing and location. A mark that gets worse after rain points toward exterior surface water, saturated soil, or a drainage route. A patch near plumbing that changes without rain deserves a plumbing check. Condensation can also leave a damp surface when humid air meets a cold wall or pipe.
- At the floor-wall joint: note whether it follows a rain event; this can help an inspection distinguish surface runoff from below-grade water pressure.
- Below a downspout or at one corner: check whether gutters, extensions, and the soil grade send water toward that spot.
- On finished-wall materials: do not cover or repaint the evidence before locating the moisture path.

Don’t confuse a cosmetic cleanup with a repair
A dry brush and a vacuum with appropriate filtration can remove loose deposits from sound masonry. But paint, caulk, or a dehumidifier alone cannot correct water that is being driven to the wall from outdoors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises correcting moisture issues before converting or finishing a basement and specifically names grading and downspout routing as possible first fixes.
